1. Henry Ford
Henry Ford is widely regarded as the father of the modern automobile industry. He was the founder of Ford Motor Company, and the chief developer of the assembly line technique of mass production. Ford created the first affordable car for the masses, the Model T, which was launched in 1908 and sold over 15 million units by 1927. Ford also pioneered the concept of “Fordism”, which combined high wages for workers with low prices for consumers. Ford was a visionary who had a global impact on transportation, economy and society.
2. Carroll Shelby
Carroll Shelby was a legendary race car driver and entrepreneur who founded Shelby American, a high-performance vehicle manufacturer. Shelby is best known for creating the Shelby Cobra, a powerful sports car based on the British AC Cobra chassis and fitted with a Ford V8 engine. Shelby also collaborated with Ford to produce the Shelby Mustang, a modified version of the popular pony car that became an icon of American muscle. Shelby’s cars were renowned for their speed, performance and style.
3. Harley Earl
Harley Earl was a pioneer of automotive design who worked for General Motors from 1927 to 1959. He was the first to introduce the concept of “art and color” to car design, and created some of the most distinctive and influential models in GM’s history, such as the Cadillac LaSalle, the Buick Y-Job, the Chevrolet Corvette and the tailfin craze of the 1950s. Earl also invented the clay modeling technique, the wraparound windshield, the hardtop roof and the annual model change.
4. Enzo Ferrari
Enzo Ferrari was an Italian-born racing driver and entrepreneur who founded Ferrari, one of the most prestigious and successful sports car brands in the world. Ferrari started his career as a driver for Alfa Romeo, but soon realized his passion was building his own cars. He established Scuderia Ferrari in 1929 as a racing team, and later expanded to road cars in 1947. Ferrari’s cars were famous for their beauty, performance and exclusivity, and won numerous championships in Formula One, Le Mans and other racing events.
5. Lee Iacocca
Lee Iacocca was a charismatic and influential business leader who worked for Ford and Chrysler in the second half of the 20th century. He was responsible for launching some of the most popular and profitable cars in American history, such as the Ford Mustang, the Ford Pinto, the Chrysler K-Car and the Chrysler minivan. He also saved Chrysler from bankruptcy in the late 1970s by securing federal loans and restructuring the company. Iacocca was a master of marketing and public relations, and became a household name in America.
6. John DeLorean
John DeLorean was a brilliant and controversial engineer and entrepreneur who founded DeLorean Motor Company in 1975. He was previously a star executive at General Motors, where he developed successful models such as the Pontiac GTO, the Pontiac Firebird and the Chevrolet Vega. He left GM to pursue his dream of creating his own car, the DeLorean DMC-12, a futuristic and innovative sports car with gull-wing doors and a stainless steel body. The car became a cult classic after appearing in the Back to the Future film trilogy, but the company failed due to low sales, high costs and legal troubles.
7. Ralph Nader
Ralph Nader is a renowned consumer advocate and political activist who had a profound impact on the American car industry in the 1960s and 1970s. He published a book in 1965 called Unsafe at Any Speed, which exposed the design flaws and safety hazards of many popular cars, especially the Chevrolet Corvair. His book sparked public outrage and led to congressional hearings, new regulations and lawsuits that forced car manufacturers to improve their standards and practices. Nader also campaigned for environmental protection, fuel efficiency and consumer rights.
8. Elon Musk
Elon Musk is a visionary and innovative entrepreneur who founded Tesla, a leading electric car company that aims to revolutionize the future of transportation.
