A Short History of Pets Taking A Ride
Are you a classic car enthusiast who loves taking your furry friend along for the ride?
If so, you’re not alone! Riding with your pet in a classic hot rod or truck is a timeless tradition that dates back to the early 1900s.
Back then, dogs were often used as mascots for race car drivers and their teams. In fact, one of the most famous racing dogs was named “Bullet” and belonged to NASCAR driver Curtis Turner. Bullet was known for riding shotgun in Turner’s race car during races.

As hot rods and trucks became more popular in the 1920s and 1930s, it wasn’t uncommon to see dogs riding in the passenger seat or even on the running boards. Cats were also known to ride along with their owners, although they were less common than dogs.
One of the most famous hot rod dogs was “Pete the Pup,” who appeared in several “Our Gang” films in the 1930s. Pete was a pit bull who was known for his distinctive eye patch and his love of riding in his owner’s hot rod.

Today, many hot rod and truck enthusiasts still take their pets along for the ride. In fact, there are even car shows and events that are dedicated to showcasing classic cars and trucks with pets riding along.
So if you’re looking to take your furry friend for a ride in your classic hot rod or truck, you’re definitely not alone! Dogs (such as pit bulls, bulldogs, and terriers), cats, birds (such as parrots and canaries), rabbits, and guinea pigs are just some of the pets that love cruising in style.
